Treatment
Pain or other symptoms associated with the sciatic nerve that are present in both legs are said to have bilateral sciatica. The term “sciatica” is widely used to describe pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness that radiates along the route of the sciatic nerve, which travels from the lower back to the hips and buttocks and then down each leg. The sciatic nerve goes from the lower back through the hips and buttocks and down each leg, often causing back pain.
Sciatica is one of the many musculoskeletal diseases that can be treated using chiropractic care, which is a non-invasive treatment method. Chiropractors are medical professionals that diagnose and treat conditions that affect the musculoskeletal system, particularly those that affect the spine.
Chiropractors will often conduct a comprehensive examination to evaluate the disease in order to determine whether or not it is bilateral sciatica. They may look at your medical history, give you a physical exam, and even request diagnostic testing like X-rays or MRI scans in order to figure out what’s causing the sciatica symptoms in the first place.
The chiropractic treatment of bilateral sciatica may entail a combination of several approaches, including manual spinal manipulations and adjustments, as well as additional procedures. The chiropractor will use controlled forces to specific parts of the spine in order to assist in restoring the appropriate alignment of the spine and to lessen the amount of nerve irritation.
It is essential to take notice of the fact that the efficacy of chiropractic treatment for bilateral sciatica might vary based on the person receiving the treatment as well as the underlying cause of the problem.
Corrective Exercises
At Collective Chiropractic, we understand the discomfort and pain associated with sciatica. We offer chiropractic corrective exercises designed to improve mobility, reduce inflammation, and improve the stability of the spine.
Our corrective exercise program includes
specific stretches and exercises to strengthen and stabilize the muscles that support the spine. Our goal is to help restore proper joint and nerve function as well as to decrease the pressure on the sciatic nerve.
In addition to specific therapeutic exercises, we may also recommend lifestyle changes to help alleviate sciatica symptoms. This may include changes to your daily posture, the ergonomics of your workspace, and the use of supportive braces or orthotics.
Pelvic Tilts: Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Gently flatten your lower back against the ground by tilting your pelvis backward. Hold for a few seconds and then release. Repeat this movement several times.
Knee-to-Chest Stretch: Lie on your back with your legs extended. Bring one knee up toward your chest, grasping it with both hands. Hold the stretch for 20-30 seconds, then switch to the other leg. Repeat the stretch a few times for each leg.
Piriformis Stretch: Lie on your back with both knees bent. Cross one leg over the other, placing the ankle just above the knee of the opposite leg. Grasp the back of the thigh of the lower leg and gently pull it towards your chest until you feel a stretch in your buttocks. Hold for 20-30 seconds, then switch sides. Repeat a few times for each leg.
Cat-Camel Stretch: Start on all fours with your hands under your shoulders and knees under your hips. Arch your back upward, pushing your spine towards the ceiling (cat position). Hold for a few seconds, then slowly lower your belly towards the floor, arching your back in the opposite direction (camel position). Repeat this movement several times.
Bird Dog Exercise: Begin on all fours with your hands under your shoulders and knees under your hips. Extend one leg straight back while simultaneously extending the opposite arm straight forward. Keep your back flat and maintain balance. Hold for a few seconds, then return to the starting position and switch sides. Repeat the exercise for both sides to ensure balanced treatment for sciatica.
Bridge Exercise: Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Slowly lift your buttocks off the ground, pushing through your heels, until your body forms a straight line from your knees to your shoulders. Hold the position for a few seconds, then lower your body back to the starting position. Repeat the exercise several times.
